Background
I grew up in Waterloo, ON and am a dual citizen of Canada and the United States.
From 1985 1989, I attended Trent University in Peterborough, ON. I graduated with an Honours BA in Cultural Studies.
I returned to school in 1990 to study journalism at Conestoga College in Kitchener, ON. Shortly thereafter, I began freelancing.
I have been working
as a reporter since the early 1990s and have written hundreds of news
stories, case studies, reviews, profiles, advertorials and business reports
for a wide variety of publications including The National Post, OpenFile,
eye weekly, NOW magazine, etc. For the past few
years, I have been retained as a freelance staff writer at Canadian Metalworking
magazine. I also contribute regularly to other trade publications. I have written and
proofread copy for corporate clients, given public presentations and helped
facilitate media training sessions. I have worked as a
blog content manager and am comfortable writing for both print and digital
sources. I regularly use social media such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
to promote my work. I am also a published
author who has written a series of non-fiction books, primarily in the
true-crime genre. My books cover everything from gangsters, bank robbers
and historic feuds to artistic motivation. I am a proud member of the Professional Writers Association of Canada. PWAC is a national organization that represents the interests of freelance writers. I live in Toronto
next to Jeanne, world's finest neighbour and girlfriend. Testimonials: "Working with
Nate has always been a pleasure. His writing is highly accessible, his
research impeccable and his professionalism always top of form." "Nate is a skilled
technical writer who I have worked with for more than five years on manufacturing
trade magazines. He consistently provides relevant and insightful copy
on a wide range of topics from industrial finishing to laser cutting.
It takes a certain kind of individual to build a long-term career as a
freelance writer and Nate has what it takes to do it." "I worked with
Nate to create a PWAC Chapter Handbook. Nate's guidelines were clear,
his deadlines were reasonable and he pulled the information from the writers
together into a cohesive, easy to use manual. Nate is a seasoned professional,
easy to work with and willing to mentor newer writers with opportunities
and suggestions. Thank you, Nate." -Lisa MacColl, freelance writer
